The Truth About Ordering Medication Over the InternetWe have been hearing advertisements lately for web sites where you can order prescription medications for your pet over the Internet. At first glance this seems like a wonderful idea. The pet owner can save some money and your local veterinarian doesn’t have the expense of keeping a large inventory on hand. Unfortunately, it is more complicated than that. Some Internet companies have been conducting business illegally or have been mishandling the drugs. Either they are not licensed in Indiana because they could not pass the basic requirements, or they lost their licenses because they were performing illegal activities. Prescription medicine can be very dangerous if used incorrectly. It can also be very delicate, having to be stored at certain temperatures or protected from bright light. It cannot be sold past its expiration date. Often there are many drugs with similar names or that look the same, but are vastly different. The size or milligram is also important and the wrong dose can be deadly to your pet. If the Veterinarian never sees the drug, they can’t be certain you are getting what you asked for. There are several legal requirements the veterinarian must follow also. The doctor must know the health status of the patient, have a diagnosis or a reason for prescribing the medication and have an accurate weight. Veterinarians may have their own rules for current Rabies vaccinations or recent blood tests, too. Many drug manufacturers feel that their medications may not be handled correctly by some of these internet companies, so they will not stand behind the product and all warranties are void. So if the product does not work or makes your pet sick, you are without legal recourse. The worst part is that some of these companies are less than scrupulous. There have been cases where they did not have licensed pharmacists filling these prescriptions and some prescriptions were filled inaccurately. It was also found that some companies were forging veterinarians’ signatures in order to fill prescriptions when the animal had never been seen by this vet. And, after all of this, most find out that with shipping and handling charges, they did not save any money at all. Everyone wants to save some money, but not if it could hurt their pet. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at the Animal Hospital of Lanesville at 952-3643. You can also get on line at www.fda.gov or call 888-463-6332 to learn more about the Do’s and Don’ts of Buying Medications On-Line. Clinic Information

ServicesWe are a full-service animal hospital offering everything from preventative care to major surgery. Appointments We see appointments from 2 until 6 on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2 until 4 on Tuesday and 10 until 2 on Saturday. This is where we keep your pet current on routine vaccinations and blood testing. If you pet is ill we perform exams, x-rays and other tests during this time. However if your pet requires surgery or grooming, he will be scheduled for another time. We also offer partial day boarding, where you drop you pet of in the morning on your way to work, we perform the requested procedures and then you can pick him up at the end of the day, all finished and ready to go. Most of the time we are able to see our clients within 15 minutes of their scheduled appointment and are finished with the procedures in less than 20 minutes. We are happy to provide you with all the information you need to help you decide which vaccines and tests are important for your pet. We will also provide you with a written estimate on all procedures before performing them if you request one. Since we do go by appointment, you will need to call us first to schedule the time. If you cannot keep your appointment, let us know as soon as possible so we can put someone else in your place. Surgeries We do our surgeries on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. In most cases you can drop your pet off that morning and pick them up that afternoon or anytime the next day. Most of our surgeries include spays and neuters, but we also remove tumors, suture cuts, fix broken legs and many other procedures. We have a fully equipped surgical area with two anesthetic machines, EKG monitor and various laboratory equipment. We offer pre-anesthetic blood testing to check out your pets health before surgery. Grooming We offer pet grooming where we can shave and bathe your pet in order to keep him clean and healthy. Grooms are done on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. You can bring you pet in that morning and pick them up in the afternoon. Boarding We have a boarding facility for both dogs and cats. Our space is limited so on holiday weekends, call early. Our runs for dogs are indoors and fully heated and air conditioned. The runs are 3 feet by 8 feet and allow room for beds, toys and bowls. It is best to bring your pet's own food so there is no sudden change in his diet. Feel free to bring anything else as long as you would not be heart broken if it were lost or destroyed while at the clinic. Some pets can become very destructive when left alone. Dentistry Pets have teeth, too! That is why we offer preventive dental care. This is where your pet is given a sedative and the teeth are cleaned and polished. This is not only important to keep the breath fresh but it is vital to your pets health and comfort. Nothing is more painful than infected or broken teeth. Clinic Information

Welcome to Our ClinicAll of us at the Animal Hospital of Lanesville would like to welcome you to our clinic. We are very proud of our hospital and our staff. Everyone on staff believes in our hospital vision which states, “To do what we can to relieve the stress, pain and suffering of pets. Also to enjoy life and to have a positive affect on our community.” This is a complete animal care facility which means we have a kennel room for sick animals, a boarding facility for our healthy guests, a lab area where we are able to run many tests, an X – ray room, a grooming area and a surgery room complete with two anesthesia machines, a heart monitor and dental equipment. The owner and Veterinarian, Dr. Rene Wingerter, is a graduate of Purdue University where she received her B.S. in agriculture in 1980 and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1984. She passed the Indiana State Boards that same year and has been working in Southern Indiana ever since. She started this practice in January of 1988. Dr. Wingerter would be unable to perform her job without the help of an excellent staff. For your convenience, we are open over 54 hours a week. Our hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 until 6:00 and on Saturdays from 10:00 until 2:00. If you have an after hours emergency we strongly recommend going to a fully staffed emergency clinic for the best care. We use the Jefferson Emergency Clinic (502-966-4104) for our own pets. In order for us to prevent long waits and help us serve you better, we do go by appointment only. You may want to take advantage of our “drop off” service where you can drop your pet off in the morning on your way to work and leave him here for the day for a minimal charge. We accept cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, and Discover. We also work with the Floyd County Humane Society, the Floyd County Animal Rescue League and HEART, however, we do not bill. We feel our clinic is special because of our strong commitment to education and preventative medicine. We strive not only to make sick pets well but to keep pets from getting sick in the first place. When we opened in 1988, there was a 10% incidence of heartworms in the dogs we tested. Through persistent education and preventative medicine we have brought the incidence down to less than 1% in our patients for this deadly disease. The same has been true for parvovirus, pyometra and feline leukemia along with many other preventable diseases. We may not be the perfect veterinary clinic for everyone, but hopefully we will be the perfect clinic for you. If there is anything we can do for you please don’t hesitate to contact us. Thanks again for trusting us with your pet. Dr. Rene Wingerter and staff |
